Estonian deep-tech Startup GaltTec presented its first out-of-lab live demonstration in Tokyo

GaltTec OÜ, an Estonian deep-tech startup making micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (mSOFCs) for portable and off-grid energy solutions, has achieved a major milestone and presented its first out-of-lab live demonstration in Japan and reached discussions of potential pilot projects.

Japan has long been at the forefront of fuel cell innovation, yet GaltTec’s technology has captured notable attention there — further underscoring the novelty and disruptive potential of our approach. The demo showcased how our compact solid oxide fuel cell delivers quiet, clean, and high-efficiency energy, making it ideally suited for real-world applications. This milestone not only strengthens our entry into the Japanese market but also reinforces the role of advanced fuel cells in accelerating decarbonization. More importantly, our decision to hold our first out-of-the-lab demonstration halfway across the world reflects GaltTec’s core values: pushing boundaries and never settling for less”, said GaltTec’s Research & Development Manager Ivan Tito Wojsiat Boere R C Souza.

Laura Elise Arvisto, co-CEO of GaltTec added that the demonstration successfully showcased GaltTec’s fuel cells working in a tabletop setup, after surviving the long transportation, and provided electricity even at temperatures lower than usual working temperature of other similar fuel cells.

“It was an honour to see such high interest from a great Japanese corporation. The Japanese market is definitely ready for this new chapter in energy production and small companies as well as huge corporations are eager to be in the first row for this. That’s why it makes perfect sense that our first technology demonstration was in Tokyo. It was a huge step for us as a company and I am really thankful for the whole GaltTec team and City of Tartu Department of Business Development who helped make this demonstration possible and supported us in this”, said Arvisto.

GaltTec also showcased its fuel cell technology innovation to major Japanese corporations at the SusHi Tech Tokyo 2025, which is the biggest startup conference in Asia. The fact that GaltTec’s fuel cells can work with natural gas makes their integration to existing gas infrastructure easier than most alternatives, providing savings in fuel cost and reducing emissions. The potential, need and readiness for deep innovation in the energy sector is undeniable in the region and GaltTec will continue pursuing pilot projects on the international stage.
