How SKYCORP Boosted UAV Endurance in Harsh Conditions with GaltTec Fuel Cells

SKYCORP Technologies is a leading UAS manufacturer focused on high-endurance, hydrogen-powered drones for industrial and defence applications. Their systems are designed for demanding missions — from first response and critical infrastructure inspection and security to mine detection in remote environments.

The Challenge

To make these missions possible, a reliable and powerful energy source is essential.

Existing open-cathode PEM fuel cells, however, lack adaptability to extreme temperatures, limiting drone performance in both winter and desert conditions.

The Solution

To overcome the limitations of its existing power system, SKYCORP Technologies CEO Marek Alliksoo turned to GaltTec for an advanced energy solution that delivers efficiency and reliability in any challenging environment.

The 2x 1kW GaltTec hydrogen fuel cell system is the ideal match for this challenge. It aligns with Skycorp’s sustainability goals through full hydrogen compatibility and directly meets the core need — stable performance in all operating conditions.

The GaltTec system delivers up to 2 kW of power output and maintains full operational performance in temperatures ranging from –40 °C to +50 °C.

Anticipated Outcome

With the GaltTec fuel cell integration, Skycorp expects to unlock new geographic markets and mission types previously limited by temperature constraints. Flight time is projected to increase by up to 20%, opening opportunities for longer missions and higher operational efficiency.

Status

The project is already underway, with a pre-order confirmed and integration testing set for late 2025. Full system validation is planned for Q2 2026, marking an important milestone in advancing UAS performance through clean hydrogen power.

CASE STUDY #2

Powering the First Out-of-Lab Demonstration in Tokyo

In May 2025, Tartu-based energy technology startup GaltTec achieved a major milestone — conducting its first out-of-lab live demonstration of its micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cell (mSOFC) technology in Tokyo, Japan. The demonstration marked GaltTec’s transition from laboratory innovation to real-world application and initiated discussions for potential pilot projects with major Japanese corporations.

The Challenge

Fuel cell systems often struggle to maintain efficiency and stability outside controlled laboratory environments. Long-distance transport, fluctuating temperatures, and setup variability can compromise performance — especially for early-stage deep-tech prototypes.

For GaltTec, proving that its technology could operate reliably and efficiently on the other side of the world was a key step toward global validation.

The Solution

GaltTec’s micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (mSOFCs) deliver quiet, clean, and efficient power for portable and off-grid applications. The system runs on natural gas, integrating seamlessly with existing infrastructure. During the Tokyo demonstration, the tabletop setup performed flawlessly even after international transport, confirming the durability and versatility of GaltTec’s design.

Results

The demonstration validated GaltTec’s readiness for global deployment and drew strong interest from major Japanese corporations.

Holding our first out-of-lab demonstration halfway across the world reflects our core values — pushing boundaries and never settling for less” – Ivan Tito Wojsiat Boere R. C. Souza, R&D Manager at GaltTec.

Japan is clearly ready for this next chapter in energy production. This milestone was made possible by our team and the support of the City of Tartu’s Department of Business Development.” – Laura Elise Arvisto, Co-CEO.

The Tokyo visit also deepened GaltTec’s cooperation with Japanese partners, following participation in SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024 and 2025.
